Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)

The use of fiberoptic endoscopy to evaluate swallowing is a procedure that utilizes current technology to view the pharynx and larynx. During the “FEES” a flexible fiberoptic endoscope is passed through the nose along to the back of the throat and hovers right behind the uvula. It does not pass through the vocal folds. At this point, the base of tongue, airway and all surrounding structures can be viewed. Foods and liquids are administered as the swallow is viewed over several consecutive trials across multiple diet textures to determine appropriate diet consistency and rule out aspiration. If the patient has been deemed an appropriate candidate a referral will be made for a FEES. The procedure will be conducted by a trained Speech Language Pathologist as set forth by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. Execution of the FEES is both convenient and timely with results delivered same day!

Sara Kiedinger CCC/SLP is certified and trained to use the FEES, which can be performed at Julia Temple Outpatient Services OR brought on location.
